What is our most popular panini?

No question, most days the Smoked Turkey winds up being the most popular panini at Beans in the Belfry. Think of a Thanksgiving meal: plenty of smoked turkey covered with whole cranberry sauce, between layers of pepperjack cheese to offset the sweet, and honey-mustard sauce to keep it moist. Put it on Tuscan farm bread and eat it right off the grill when the bread is crispy crunchy.

But the other day, the Roma Panini way outsold the Turkey. Just on that one day – go figure. The Roma is a favorite when you don’t want meat that day: freshly sliced mozzarella, drizzled with olive oil, covered with fresh basil and slices of ripe tomato. The cheese melts between the rustic farm bread and it’s a delight of Italian flavors.

We have six kinds of panini all together – see our menu selection on our website or come in for lunch or dinner. Pair your panini with a light white or red wine from Germany or France. The Tuscan panini and Old Berlin panini probably want to be paired with a fresh malty or hoppy beer.

What’s a panini? Paninis are a great Italian culinary invention, although, similar to pizza, the Anglo-Saxon version is slightly different than what you would find in Italy these days. Panini really means small rolls in Italian. It’s also the name for the double-sided grill that is used to make the panini. The best panini grills, just like the best espresso machines, are made in Italy and we have one of those. But it’s the caring touch of our baristas Dan, Jesse, Morgan, newly arrived Jimmy and returning Ashley that make the paninis as good as they are; and the recipes from Melanie’s creative kitchen, of course.

Jazz Quartet with exciting players scheduled for Wednesday, April 11, and second Wednesdays

Performers want to be on the stage and connect with an audience.

Jeff Cosgrove’s jazz quartet will do just that this Wednesday, April 11, and on second Wednesdays of the month at Beans in the Belfry.

The group will be an interpretive jazz quartet featuring some of the areas most exciting players.
Jeff Cosgrove – Drums
Mark Lysher – Bass
Rodrigo Pinchera – Piano
Kurtis Adams – Saxophone

They will be performing music by composers Chick Corea, Paul Motian, Don Cherry, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and Kurtis Adams.

Jeff, thank you so much for coming down to Brunswick and bringing your quartet for a special evening of exciting jazz. We appreciate it.

Brunswick Valentine – a bottle of wine, chocolate cake, sweet music

If you live in the Brunswick neighborhood, no need to drive for miles out of town to find a nice spot to treat your Valentine. Come downtown to Beans in the Belfry, we have a cozy table waiting for you. A bottle of Cabernet from nearby Sugarloaf Mountain, or a Merlot from the Mondavi winery in California, two glasses, a slice of the best triple chocolate cake or molten lava cake with icecream, the warmth from our fireplace. We’ll dim the lights. Doc will be playing on the keyboard. Then, just a quick walk or 5 minute drive home. An evening that creates memories.

Jeff, thank you so much for bringing John Thomas and Mark Lysher with you today. The jazz was superb, John is a master on the saxophone and Mark really knows how to work the big brown bass.

While you were playing the drums, the little Cosgroves and their friends enjoyed playing toys. Sarah thank you so much for bringing them in, and your friends as well. How they have grown.

Jim took pictures and as promised, we are posting them on facebook to share – I don’t think you had a chance to see them. It looks like we’ll see you (hear you) next on Sunday, March 4!

Estrella Damm of Barcelona brews DAURA, a glutenfree beer made of barley malt instead of wheat. It has received three international awards in 2011, Gold Medal at the World Beer Championships, Gold Medal at the International Beer Challenge and the World’s Best Gluten-free Lager Award at the World Beer Awards.
